VHTA is excited to announce the December 4th “Northern Virginia Tourism Summit”, presented by the VHTA NOVA chapter and sponsored by B.F. Saul Company and Sysco Guest Supply. It will be held at the Executive Conference & Training Center in Dulles, VA and will take place from 8 AM to 11 AM. This year’s event is open to the public free of charge, includes breakfast and coffee, and will feature an expert list of panelists who will address how you can plug into the marketing opportunities as a result of more overseas visitors staying longer and spending resources in Virginia. 2012 Northern Virginia Tourism Summit: List of Speakers
Matt Gaffney, President & CEO, Capital Region USA
Matt Gaffney is the president & CEO of Capital Region USA, Inc. (CRUSA), the official regional destination marketing organization promoting Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland internationally, in partnership with Destination DC, the Virginia Tourism Corporation, the Maryland Office of Tourism Development and the Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority.
Prior to CRUSA, Matt directed marketing, branding and public relations for iJET Travel Intelligence, an emerging travel technology company in Annapolis, Maryland.
Formerly, Matt worked for 13 years at the Virginia Tourism Corporation. As Vice President, Worldwide Sales and Marketing, he directed the planning, implementation and evaluation of Virginia’s tourism sales and marketing campaigns in domestic and overseas markets.
Prior to his employment with the Virginia Tourism Corporation, Matt was the Director of Marketing for the Thomas Jefferson Foundation, a non-profit organization which owns and operates Thomas Jefferson’s home, Monticello.
Matt received a BA from the University of Virginia and an MBA from the George Washington University.
Paul Cerula, Chief Business Development Officer, Brand USA
Paul Cerula serves as Chief Business Development Officer for Brand USA, a public-private partnership dedicated to increasing international visitation to the United States through marketing and promotional efforts. Paul is a sales, marketing and business leader in the hospitality industry, widely recognized for developing and implementing visionary strategic plans while cultivating cross-discipline, top-performing teams that span the globe. As a senior-level executive at Marriott International, Inc., Paul served as a catalyst for positive change and growth. His skill set ranges from acquisition integration and global negotiations to corporate branding and dynamic public speaking.
Over his career at Marriott, which spanned more than 30 years, Paul has served in numerous roles. Because of the deep experience Paul gained from opening over 300 international hotels, he was selected in 2009 to develop and implement Marriott’s comprehensive Global Sales Long Range Strategic Plan aimed at supporting the doubling of its hotels across Europe, India and China in five years. As Regional Vice President of Sales & Marketing, he introduced Marriott’s Golden Circle Awards, a premier incentive and recognition program which became the platform for Marriott’s sales and marketing recognition program today. Paul earned his Bachelor of Science in Hotel, Recreation, and Institutional Management from The Pennsylvania State University.
Heidi Johannesen, International Marketing Director, Virginia Tourism Corporation
Heidi Johannesen has been with the Virginia Tourism Corporation for fourteen years and in that time has been responsible for directing and implementing international marketing and public relations strategies. Under Heidi’s leadership the Commonwealth of Virginia has experienced record growth in overseas visitor spending highlighted by a 21% increase in 2011. Canada, one of Heidi’s primary responsibilities, remains the number one international market for Virginia as a result of continued double digit growth in visitation and spending by Canadian visitors.
Heidi sits on the board for the Capital Region USA which is the official regional destination marketing organization promoting Washington, DC, Virginia and Maryland internationally.
Prior to affiliating with Virginia Tourism Corporation, Heidi worked for The Mayflower Renaissance Washington, DC Hotel in various capacities and then was employed by the National Association of Home Builders, a leading trade association for the housing industry, overseeing convention marketing.
